DERMABRASION IN MELBOURNE, FL

In Melbourne, FL

Dermabrasion is an exfoliating technique that uses a rotating device to surgically scrape off the outer layers of skin on the face to boost collagen production and improve the overall appearance of the skin. At Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, specialists Rebecca Novo, MD, and Anita Saluja, MD, combine their expertise in plastic surgery and dermatology to perform specialized procedures, such as dermabrasion, for residents of Melbourne, Indialantic, Viera, Brevard County, and surrounding Central Florida communities who want to rejuvenate their facial appearance.

How can Dermabrasion improve my appearance?

Among the many conditions that dermabrasion can target and treat are fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and uneven texture. Dermabrasion also diminishes the appearance of scars from acne, injuries, or prior surgery. Dermabrasion may also be used to remove moles and pre-cancerous growths called keratoses.

Who can benefit from Dermabrasion?

Adults of all ages can benefit from dermabrasion, but the procedure may not be for everyone. Some factors that may determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure include your skin type, coloring, and medical history. The procedure may cause discoloration in the skin of individuals with darker complexions. Anyone prone to allergic rashes or those who get frequent fever blisters or cold sores may experience a reaction to the treatment. Freckles and moles may be permanently removed from the treated area. Additionally, it is best to postpone treatment during the active stages of acne to reduce the risk of infection. You may also need to postpone or reconsider the procedure if you’ve had radiation treatments, a bad burn, or a recent chemical peel.

How is Dermabrasion performed?

Dermabrasion may be performed under local anesthesia combined with a sedative to numb the area and prevent any discomfort. In some cases, a topical anesthetic may be used along with or instead of local anesthesia. In more severe cases, general anesthesia may be used.  During the procedure, the surgeon uses a precise rotating device to surgically remove the top layers of skin, revealing a fresh new layer of skin.  The procedure is relatively simple and normally completed in under two hours.

Preparing for Dermabrasion

During your initial consultation, our team of specialists will evaluate your condition and medical history, conduct a routine examination, and take pictures of your face. We will explain the procedure to you in detail, including risks, post-op instructions, and costs.  You will receive specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on what you may eat and drink, as well as any medications that you must suspend to prepare for the treatment. You will also receive specific instructions on how to prepare your skin prior to surgery. You should be nicotine-free for at least a week or two before and after surgery since smoking decreases blood circulation in the skin and slows down the healing process.  You should prepare to take a few days off to rest following the procedure and arrange to have someone drive you home after your surgery.

What to expect after Dermabrasion

Immediately following the procedure, the skin is typically red and swollen, and you may find it difficult to eat and speak. It is normal to experience some tingling, burning, or soreness in the skin, which may be alleviated by either prescription or over-the-counter medication. The swelling subsides naturally within a few days to a week. In some cases, a scab or crust will form over the treated area as part of the healing process. This scab will gradually fall off as a new layer of fresh new skin forms underneath. Your skin may itch as new skin begins to grow, and this may be alleviated by a specially prescribed ointment, which if applied immediately after the procedure, will reduce or prevent the formation of a scab. You must follow a detailed set of instructions regarding the care of your skin after surgery. Men will have to delay shaving and must switch to an electric razor for the first few shaves after surgery.

How much does Dermabrasion cost in Melbourne, FL?

The cost of the procedure varies depending on the extent of work done and the size of the treatment area. Most insurance providers don’t cover cosmetic procedures, but some may cover dermabrasion when performed to treat precancerous skin growths. For costs not covered by insurance, our office provides flexible financing and payment options.
