WHAT IS ACNE?

Acne is a condition that causes blemishes in the skin. There are various types of acne with different causes and treatments. There are three main categories that describe most types of acne:

  • Comedonal acne. This condition is characterized by outbreaks of blackheads and whiteheads. It develops due to the accumulation of sebum, an oily secretion produced by the skin itself. Accumulated sebum, along with old skin cells, clogs the pores of the skin. Comedonal acne is most often seen on the forehead, nose, and chin.
  • Inflammatory acne. This form of acne refers to a condition in which blackheads and whiteheads become reddened and inflamed.
  • Cystic acne. This is the most serious form of acne, and there is a strong indication that it may be hereditary. Cystic acne occurs when the skin in the area of the outbreak develops larger or deeper nodules. Cystic acne may be very painful and can result in permanent scarring.

DO ONLY TEENAGERS GET ACNE?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does stress acne look like?

Stress acne can look different on anyone. Some may have small pimples and breakouts, while others may have larger breakouts and pimples.

What foods cause acne?

Some of the foods that can cause acne are: Sugar, gluten, highly processed foods, and dairy products.

How do you clear up acne?

Acne is different for everyone. A consultation with a dermatologist would best determine the right plan for you.

How long does acne last?

Depending on the severity, acne can last a few weeks to several decades.

What can I drink in the morning for clear skin?

Some suggestions would be: Hydrate with water, fresh tomato juice, cucumber juice, spinach juice and ginger lemon juice.

What does cystic acne look like?

Cystic acne can be large, pus-filled lesions that look similar to boils. Like nodules, cysts can be painful and should be treated by a dermatologist. People who develop nodules and cysts are usually considered to have a more severe form of acne.

How should I sleep to avoid acne?

Sleep on a clean pillowcase, remove all makeup nightly, dont use the same wash cloth twice, dont bring your cell phone to bed, dont keep the T.V. remote in the bed, and dont take stress to bed with you.

Should I use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid?

If you have blackheads and whiteheads, salicylic acid alone should work well to clear out your pores. If your acne tends to be inflammatory, such as papules and pustules, opt for benzoyl peroxide to stop outbreaks at the source. For sensitive skin, start with salicylic acid, since its less likely to cause irritation.

What Causes Acne?

Acne develops when sebum — an oily substance that lubricates your hair and skin — and dead skin cells plug hair follicles. Bacteria can trigger inflammation and infection resulting in more severe acne.

Is cystic acne hormonal?

Cystic acne tends to occur in people with oily skin. Its also more common in teens, women, and older adults with hormonal imbalances. Usually, cystic acne can improve with age. However, the stubborn and painful bumps wont go away on their own.

What can I drink to clear my skin?

Drinking a lot of water always help clear your skin. Some believe that drinking green tea and lemon, lemongrass and tumeric tea helps clear acne because these ingredients help with inflammation.
